A HeliCoil is a coiled threaded insert that installs into the part, providing the correct threads for the original fastener. These inserts have a diamond-shaped cross section with 60-degree threads on the inside and specially designed threads on the outer ring, which grips the walls of the hole.
How do HeliCoils lock?
When installed into a HeliCoil tapped hole, the insert provides permanent conventional screw threads. These coils serve as a locking device by gripping the threads of the installed screw, effectively preventing the screw from loosening under vibration or impact.
Do HeliCoils work on through holes?
If the thread was completely stripped out to begin with, you can skip the drilling step, because the hole will already be at the correct diameter for tapping for installation of the HeliCoil. For a through hole you can run the tap all the way through for a full thread.
How strong is a HeliCoil repair?
The inserts are made from 18-8 stainless that is work hardened to 220,000 psi tensile strength. Follow the instructions carefully and it will be stronger than it was before the insert.
What keeps a helicoil in place?
HeliCoils do not require thread sealants or thread locker in order retain the insert, but if you feel the need to use sealant or thread locker, a light coating may be applied to the outer threads, making sure the inner threads are clean. Once installed, HeliCoil inserts are very reliable and trustworthy.
What is better than a helicoil?
Time Sert inserts for head bolt applications are much thicker than the Helicoil brand. They are more like a solid metal bushing which is threaded on the inside and out. The Time Sert brand insert is installed with a special driver.
Can you install a helicoil without tool?
Yes, the helicoil insert requires a special tap. The insert can be installed without the tool with some jockying. Invariably, if you do not purchase the entire helicoil set, something else will break that’s the same size bolt.
Do you put Loctite on helicoils?
Helicoils designed to be put into dry holes do not use any form of loctite or thread seal. A helicoil when inserted properly will have movement inside hole they are inserted into.
Are helicoils permanent?
If you steam clean the engine at any stage make sure the plug wells are cleaned and dried after your done. Also, when you do change the plugs make sure they are not over tightened. With these precautions a Helicoil should last for the life of the engine. Helicoil is a permanent repair …at least it’s supposed to be.
What is a tang on a helicoil?
A tanged helical insert extends the end of the coil wire across the radius of the coil. This provides a grip point for the helical insert tool so it can rotate the coil insert to snugly fit in the hole. Is helicoil stronger than original threads?
